

Land, known as tochi in Japanese (as per Chinese characters at left, is considered sacred by the Japanese, thus
the premium one must pay to acquire it, apart from the scarcity of it in the larger cities.
Yet acquistion is attainable by higher wealth individuals, and even those not considered rich especially in rural areas only one hour by train from Tokyo. A few foreigners have even bought land in Tokyo which has returned a handsome profit in recent years. Of late many developments have been going up in Hokkaido, close to ski resorts, and many westerners have been at the forefront and drivers in these investments and have already seen land prices rise as a result.
