Residential properties in Japan's larger cities are on par with some of the most expensive real estate in the world (London, New York, Mumbai, Paris, San Francisco, etc.). Most expatriate transferees receive a housing allowance from $3,500 up to $20,000 (per month) depending on their position in the company and family situation. It is not unusual to see rents in the 1 million yen ($8,350) per month range for a flat in central Tokyo with only two bedrooms, living room, dining room and kitchen (aka 2LDK)!
On the high end houses remain a viable option especially for those who don't like being confined in a large tower-type structure or simply prefer not to be in an apartment complex. There are more pet-friendly buildings opened of late so that is no longer an issue for pet owners but a pet is a negotiable option for most houses although it usually requires a larger deposit.
