Japan has some of the finest restaurants in the world. The Japanese are very passionate about food and especially presentation but the non-Japanese population might have some preconceptions about how expensive fine dining in Japan can be, and while this is true for exclusive venues, for the most part there are many restaurants serving up a wide variety of cuisine types (from western to Asian to Japanese) that are not only excellent as far as taste but also for "cost performance" (one of the Japanese people's most popular phrases, meaning exactly what is implies, value!).
In the larger cities there is an incredible selection of restaurants serving up almost every type of food available on the planet: African (Ethiopian, Kenyan and Nigerian); American (there are a vast number of US-based franchises with a presence here), including Mexican and South American fare (Argentine, Brasilian and Peruvian); Asian (Chinese [various provinicial types, as well as Taiwanese and Hong Kong] Burmese, Filipino, Korean, Indian, Indonesian, Malaysian, Sri Lankan, Thai, Vietnamese, etc.); European (Japan is well noted for its French and Italian restaurants) including British, German, Greek, Irish, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, etc.; and many from Oceania (OZ and a few Kiwi venues).
And lastly there is an incredible number of Japanese restaurants offering such a wide variety of cuisine types that it boggles the mind. Of course the sushi is the freshest and best in the world (not to discount some overseas restaurants offering incredible sushi!) but Japanese cuisine is quite diverse and one must keep an open mind, notwithstanding those who abstain from certain food due to religious, moral or other reasons, and experience such things as ramen, udon or soba (soup-based noodle dishes); nabe (stew) especially the sumo wrestlers favorite, chanko nabe. Beef dishes, sukiyaki, shabu shabu, teppanyaki (in which steak is cooked on a stainless steel grill with garlic and various vegetables, what Benihana serves!) and yakiniku (or Korean-style BBQ, interestingly enough invented by Koreans in Japan!) usually hook foreigners for the long haul. Quite a number take a liking to the sticky white rice as well and end up taking home rice cookers...
